About
The platform Casting Screens serves as a digital exhibition space of artistic screencasts – the form of video documentation for our digital lives. This platform investigates multiple questions:
How do artists process and explore digital culture through screen recordings? What is the role and relevance of screencasts as an artistic medium for the depiction of digital culture? In which ways is this relatively young medium being used artistically?
The platform merges the digital exhibition of artworks and theoretical reflections, which examine the topic of Screencasting from various points of view. In these, the different possibilities of interaction between man and machine, the obvious and the speculative in digital works shall become visible.

The work is an attempt to create an intimate portrait of a video game avatar.
In trying to explore the perpetuated inner life of the avatar there is a sense of anxiety reflected upon it. This inner emotional being of the avatar although stays merely an arbitrary one, as the account of consciousness given to it expands beyond the virtual parameters of the environment it is bound to. Therefore it is only in manipulated scenes, created within the game world, that the character seemingly moves beyond it's given boundaries and shows emotional experiences such as fear or anxiety.
The piece was created through screen captures of the game Grand Theft Auto V and later cut into scenes to form the final video.
There is a strong fluctuation in various influences which determine the outcome of the artist's work, Julian Asbäck. Yet the medium of video with it's dominat recipatory articulation, the screen, has become the constant through which his work is to be perceived. The topics and issues discussed often concern the individual subject's
engagement with the ever more expanding digital sphere we work and live in. Particularly in regards of phenomenological perception of the digital, questions arise on how intermingled an artificial world and a physical one are and potentially can be. This further leads to the inquiry on how the creation of newly developed digital environments influences our behaviour in the real world an vice versa.
