counting petals
Presented in a prose poem through diary-like text fragments by a generation Y character a story is being told. I experiment with ambiguity in terms of content by merging the everyday fantastic with alternative facts and the fictitious. Speculative future scenarios are equally real as past events.
The image material is entirely made up of roses being found footage from the Internet. The rose may be depicted as a symbol of romance and love, yet here it is being misappropriated by the enormous variety being shown to the point of exhaustion.
As the story unfolds the more layers get pealed off like the petals of a rose, thereby evoking a reference to the petal counting (= work title) game in which the object as a love symbol is ironically being torn apart. The font used and the placement and sizing of the words support the impression of scrappy diary entries. All of this is accompanied by a musical piece in three parts, which underlines the emotional states of the character, communicates the atmosphere and also sets a reading rhythm.
